Shamanism, Techno and Cyberspace: Of "Natural" and "Artificial" Paradises

The rave culture of the 1990s deliberately uses methods that may derive from or relate to shamanism in order to enable rave members to experience ecstatic experiences.

Various techniques are used in shamanism to produce altered consciousness, including the ingestion of psychoactive substances, rhythmic stimulation (like drumming, rattling, dancing), breath control, postures (like dance positions), etc. The result is a shamanic state known as ecstasy or a journey into another world is felt.

Modern cyber culture creates virtual worlds that copy other realities. However, there are some similarities between the Internet and shamanic consciousness. Finally, Charles Baudelaire's concept of "artificial paradise" is critically examined.
