In 1971, a group of young American anthropologists and botanists set out for the Amazon to investigate the effect of hallucinogenic plants on the worldview of native shamans. Ingesting psilocybin mushrooms growing there put two of them, Terence McKenna and his brother Dennis, into the state themselves, which they wanted to study in vision-seeking shamans. This experience convinced McKenna that the world of the shaman's ecstatic trance, the visionary world of psilocybin, and the world in which extraterrestrials are encountered are different aspects of the same paradoxical reality. In the years that followed, he solidified his view that psilocybin could be used to explore the relationship between spirit and the unknown. As a researcher of a new generation, he explored the non-rational parts of the psyche and developed a "quantum psychology" using his rational science training. His book reads as excitingly as an account of exploring a foreign continent. With a foreword by Micky Remann.
