Since Arthur Heffter of 100 years ago at the University of Leipzig first isolated mescaline from the Mexican peyote cactus and then also characterized it in a self-experiment, several thousand articles on the substance class of hallucinogens (entheogens, phantastics, psychedelics, etc.) have appeared in the international literature. Substances like LSD have been studied more profoundly and diversely over decades than most pharmaceuticals in use today. 

Despite the enormous accumulation of biochemical, psychiatric and psychotherapeutic research results, however, no corresponding implementation with regard to an application in medicine took place. The present anthology was compiled from the abundance of publications. The result is a collection of articles from very different fields, with preference given to characteristic pioneering articles that are structured in a generally understandable way.
